Space Marine 2's Epic Games client on Steam is for cross-play, confirms publisher

UPDATE 11/09/24: Epic Games has confirmed cross-play across all PC storefronts is a requirement of its games store for all multiplayer games.
A statement shared with Eurogamer from an Epic Games spokesperson reads: “Cross-play across all PC storefronts is a requirement of the Epic Games Store for all multiplayer games, ensuring that players and friends can play together wherever they purchase their games. Developers are free to choose any solutions that meet this requirement, including Epic Online Services, which may require a secondary installation to enable the Social Overlay (friends lists, cross-platform invites, etc) on PC.”
While this doesn’t mention any game specifically, it’s clear this is a general requirement as cross-play between platforms becomes more widespread.

ORIGINAL 06/09/24: Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 publisher Focus Entertainment has clarified players do not need to link their Steam account to Epic Games in order to play the game.
When launching the game on Steam, an Epic Online Services client is installed once the game’s EULA (End User Licence Agreement) is accepted. This is to support optional cross-play between players on both platforms and to synchronise friend lists between them, Focus confirmed in a forum post.
“However, please be aware linking your Steam and Epic accounts is not required to enjoy the game,” the company wrote. “These features are entirely optional and will not affect your gameplay experience in any way.”
